Most Teams Do Not Have a Backup Problem. They Have a Recoverability Problem.
A successful backup does not guarantee recoverability.
That is the trap.
In many environments, people feel reassured because backup jobs are green. But in a real failure, the question is not whether data exists somewhere.
Can we actually recover cleanly, confidently, and without confusion under pressure?
That is why I have been thinking more about operational controls that move teams beyond routine backup activity and closer to measurable recovery confidence.
One example is a standardised pre-deployment backup control I have been working on for Azure SQL Managed Instance.
The point is not scripting for its own sake. It is to reduce the risk of missed databases before change, improve rollback readiness, standardise execution, and create consistent audit evidence.
The real question is not: did a backup happen?
It is: did we design the control well enough to trust the outcome?
Reliable operations do not come from heroics. They come from structure.
