The Method

The B.E.C.O.M.E.™ Method

The six-stage professional formation method for becoming a 365 IT Professional™.

BBuild EEmbrace CCommit OOwn MMentor EExpand

Understanding your career architecture is one thing. Becoming the professional capable of strengthening it is another.

B.E.C.O.M.E.™ is the deeper professional-formation method within the 365 Career Architecture ecosystem.

It develops six areas of professional practice:

Build. Embrace. Commit. Own. Mentor. Expand.

Together, they help move an IT professional from reactive career progression towards deliberate professional formation, building the identity, judgment, capability, authority, leadership and leverage required to operate a durable career.

The goal is not simply to advance to another job title. It is to become the kind of professional who can remain trusted, relevant and increasingly valuable as technology, organisations and careers change.

Why B.E.C.O.M.E.™ exists

Career architecture requires more than career knowledge.

The Five Layers of Career Architecture, Identity, Skills, Value, Visibility and Leverage, describe the structure of a career. B.E.C.O.M.E.™ goes deeper. It asks:

Who must you become to build and operate that architecture deliberately?

Knowing that your career has a visibility problem does not automatically make you more visible.
Knowing that your skills are scattered does not create mastery.
Knowing that your work produces value does not teach you how to think strategically.
And understanding leverage does not automatically give you the judgment, relationships or professional authority required to create it.

Information can reveal the gap.

Formation changes the professional.

That is the role of B.E.C.O.M.E.™

The six stages

Build. Embrace. Commit. Own. Mentor. Expand.

B
Build

Build a Rock-Solid Foundation

Identity. Purpose. Belief. Direction.

Before deciding what to learn, where to move or what opportunity to pursue, you need a stronger answer to a more fundamental question:

Who are you becoming?

Build is where you stop allowing your current job title to define the limits of your professional identity.

You develop greater clarity around:

the professional you intend to become;
the problems you want to become trusted to solve;
the values and standards that will govern how you operate;
the direction you want your career to compound towards;
and the beliefs that influence the decisions you are prepared to make.

A strong foundation does not make a career immune to disruption.

It gives you something deeper than a title to build from when disruption comes.

Ask yourself
Who am I becoming?
What do I want to become trusted for?
What standards will define how I operate?
What direction am I deliberately building towards?

The 365 IT Professional™ begins by building identity before income.

E
Embrace

Embrace Strategic Thinking and Value Creation

Context. Outcomes. Foresight. Value.

Technical capability matters. But technical activity and professional value are not the same thing.

Embrace is where you learn to look beyond the task and understand the larger system around it.

Instead of asking only, “What am I supposed to do?”, you increasingly ask:

What outcome are we trying to create, protect or improve?

You learn to connect technical work to outcomes such as:

reliability, risk reduction, customer experience, productivity, cost, revenue, resilience, compliance, service continuity and organisational capability.

You begin understanding not only how technology works, but why the organisation invests in it.

Ask
Who benefits from this work?
What problem does it solve?
What risk does it reduce?
What outcome does it improve?
How will I recognise and evidence the value created?

The 365 IT Professional™ does not stop at execution. They seek context and create value intentionally.

C
Commit

Commit to Mastery

Discipline. Capability. Judgment. Depth.

The Human–AI Era makes scattered knowledge increasingly insufficient.

As tools make execution faster and more accessible, value increasingly shifts towards knowing what should be done, why it matters, what trade-offs are acceptable and what consequences must be owned.

That requires more than collecting certifications. It requires coherent capability and professional judgment.

Commit is where learning becomes deliberate. You identify the capabilities your direction requires and develop them with sufficient depth that other people can rely on you.

This may include focused 90-Day Growth Sprints: periods of deliberate development around a clearly defined capability, problem space or professional objective.

The goal is not to learn everything. It is to build a capability stack that makes sense together.

Over time:

practice creates capability;
capability creates evidence;
evidence creates trust.

The 365 IT Professional™ does not collect skills at random. They build capability with direction.

O
Own

Own Your Name and Professional Authority

Legibility. Trust. Reputation. Influence.

Your employer gives you a title. Your career accumulates around your name.

Own is where you take responsibility for making the quality and value of your contribution sufficiently legible that the right people can understand and trust it.

This is not empty self-promotion. And it is not about becoming an influencer. It is about ensuring that meaningful work does not disappear into invisible execution.

You learn to:

document meaningful outcomes;
communicate contribution clearly;
make your reasoning visible;
share useful lessons and insight;
contribute to professional conversations;
build trusted relationships;
create a body of professional evidence;
and become associated with problems you are increasingly trusted to solve.

A platform may help distribute your work. But your professional identity should never become dependent on the platform.

Visibility without substance is noise. Substance that remains permanently invisible struggles to compound.

The objective is trusted professional legibility.

The 365 IT Professional™ owns their name by giving people credible reasons to trust what that name represents.

M
Mentor

Mentor and Multiply

Leadership. Teaching. Development. Multiplication.

Professional growth reaches another level when your capability begins creating capability in other people.

Mentor is not limited to running a formal mentoring programme. It can happen when you:

teach a colleague;
document knowledge others can reuse;
coach someone through a difficult problem;
develop a successor;
sponsor emerging talent;
share hard-earned lessons;
create systems that reduce dependency on you;
or allow someone more experienced to challenge and stretch your own thinking.

Teaching forces clarity. Mentoring develops leadership. Being mentored preserves teachability.

And developing others turns individual capability into something larger than individual performance.

A professional who must personally solve every problem may be valuable. A professional who makes the people and systems around them stronger creates a different level of value.

The 365 IT Professional™ does not only accumulate knowledge. They multiply capability.

E
Expand

Expand and Leverage

Scale. Professional capital. Optionality. Lasting impact.

Expansion is not synonymous with promotion. And it does not automatically mean leaving employment or starting a business.

Expansion means increasing the range across which your accumulated professional capital can create value.

By this stage, you are deliberately connecting identity, capability, outcomes, reputation, relationships, evidence, judgment and leadership.

Those assets can begin creating stronger future possibilities. That might mean:

larger organisational responsibility;
deeper technical authority;
cross-functional influence;
advisory work;
leadership;
mentoring;
teaching;
consulting;
intellectual property;
entrepreneurship;
or other paths aligned with the career you want to build.

The question becomes:

What will this compound?
Will this decision increase your capability?
Your judgment?
Your credibility?
Your relationships?
Your authority?
Your leadership?
Your professional optionality?

Expansion is where today’s contribution begins making tomorrow’s opportunities more credible.

The 365 IT Professional™ deliberately converts accumulated professional capital into wider options and greater impact.

Not a ladder

You do not complete six stages, collect a badge and finish becoming.

Professional formation is recursive.

A larger role may expose a new weakness in your foundation.
A technological shift may require new mastery.
Greater responsibility may demand a higher level of strategic thinking.
Entering a new industry may require you to establish authority again.
Leadership may expose how much more you need to learn about multiplying others.

Expansion creates a larger arena. And the larger arena calls you back to Build.

So you return
BBuild.
EEmbrace.
CCommit.
OOwn.
MMentor.
EExpand.

But you do not necessarily return as the same professional. You return with more experience, evidence, responsibility and perspective.

You do not B.E.C.O.M.E. once. You B.E.C.O.M.E. at every new level.

The standard is demanding. The invitation is open.

Becoming a 365 IT Professional™ is not a status conferred by an employer, job title, salary or certification. Nor is it a claim to perfection.

It is a professional standard practised through repeated choices.

To build rather than drift.
To understand value rather than merely complete activity.
To pursue mastery rather than accumulate credentials without direction.
To own your name rather than outsource your professional identity.
To multiply what you know rather than make yourself the permanent bottleneck.
To turn professional effort into capital that can compound into wider options.

Not everyone will choose to operate this way. But the standard is not reserved for a privileged few. It can be practised deliberately, strengthened over time and demonstrated through evidence.

That is the work of becoming. That is B.E.C.O.M.E.™ And that is how you begin to operate as a 365 IT Professional™.
